Back when the Canadian Minifootball Federation (CMF) was just a concept, Jan Machala knew that the federation would eventually need a logo that would stand out and identify the sport for Canadians.
Once the time came to create the logo, Machala turned to a friend to bring his idea to life. He called on Martina Borecka, a freelance graphic designer based in Vancouver, to create the design in December 2019.
Borecka said that a lot of work went into the logo but is pleased with how it turned out.
“There’s everything where it has to be. It’s visible that it’s Canadian, it’s visible it’s football,” she said. “There is the shield protecting all the [components]. So I’m satisfied with that.”
During the creation process, Machala showed Borecka some of his favourite football and minifootball shields that helped inspire her to come up with roughly 30 different designs for Machala to go over.
The two parties went back and forth over numerous variations of the logo before ultimately selecting the shield that the CMF currently uses.

She said that part of why she likes the emblem is that it has both her and Machala’s ideas incorporated in it.
“Because both of us are from the Czech Republic, every time I see the logo, it reminds me a little bit of something from Czech,” she said about the unique aspects of the logo. “The leaf has two parts and it [represents] Monika and Jan because they are partners and they created this company.”
Borecka was initially trying to include many different components into the logo but realized it would be too complex so she thought it would be best to simplify it.
The end result is a striking logo that incorporates an unmistakable Canadian maple leaf and a ball in motion, making for a visually pleasing design that immediately identifies with minifootball.
“There’s a little bit of the movement of the ball. Before it was more dynamic than now. But we tried to make it easier and simpler,” she said.
With the logo now complete, Borecka said she would gladly help the CMF in the future as the co-founders are her friends.
